It was established in 1905. With over 100 years of coal mining history but no proper environmental protection measures, Heshan Area has been suffering serious environmental problems, such as land destruction, physical stability problem, subsidence, underground water pollution and soil contamination, etc. In 2000 the mine was declared off limits for exploitation due to exhaustion of coal resources. Based on a detailed investigation and environmental assessment, a variety of technical methods and projects as follows have been and will continue to be adopted to restore the environment of Heshan Coal Mine Area: GD06 rock pile will be converted into a part of Heshan National Mine Park to provide a more beautiful and comfortable environment for local residents. This area which covers an area of 0.144 km2 is composed of several waste rock piles. The part work that has been completed includes retaining wall, tree planting, and paths, drain ditches and viewing platforms construction. Hongshui Riverside will be changed into a construction land and entertainment place. The main problem in this area is mine pits and landscape destruction along the Hongshui Riverside due to the long history of mining. On the one hand, the mine pits has been backfilled to increase the land for civil engineering. On the other hand, some viewing platforms have been built along the river to improve the surrounding landscape. Dongkuang Area will be changed into the main part of Heshan National Mine Park. Most mining relics such as mining facilities, equipment and office buildings of Heshan Coal Mine are kept there. The project includes restoring the damaged buildings and equipment, greening the GD01 rock pile and developing underground mining experience area. Monitoring Project: the monitoring project will be distributed in GD06 rock pile, Hongshui riverside and Dongkuang area. It is planned to test the effect of the projects and to provide basis for follow-up projects through monitoring the deformation of the architectural construction. This project will last for 10 years.
