As mineral resources are declining and closures are planned, deciding an asset’s future becomes crucial for managing liability. This paper outlines the methodology, key insights and benefits of applying a value optimisation (VO) sprint, demonstrating how targeted analysis of key decisions can improve closure outcomes. Once closure cost is estimated, many organisations assume the strategy is fixed. This is instead when the greatest opportunity for optimising value emerges because the basis is now understood. A structured VO sprint at this point enables owners to interrogate the basis and assumptions (levers) underpinning their closure strategy. There is also opportunity to identify innovative options to reduce cost, accelerate relinquishment, or enhance end-use outcomes. The VO sprint approach delivers a framework for comparing closure scenarios whereby cross-functional teams evaluate the key cost levers: execution models, project scope and rehabilitation strategies. Execution models – from integrated contractor to owner-led delivery – can materially shift cost profiles, risk allocation and schedule certainty. Similarly, adjusting the duration of closure works can unlock efficiencies, reduce overheads or build the capacity of local businesses. Options can be challenged to explore alternative landform designs, material movement philosophies, or end-use objectives that meet regulatory and community requirements and achieve relinquishment objectives, but prioritise and balance resources. This enables asset owners to select the most suitable strategy for the site’s physical, regulatory and social context. Focus is not solely on a lower-cost plan. Rather, aspects of multicriteria analysis (MCA) together with a VO sprint are adopted so the closure strategy balances the full spectrum of value, encompassing financial considerations alongside environmental and community-driven outcomes.
