These correspond to 2 types of rock burst damage mechanisms – seismic shakedown and strain bursting – for which dynamic loading is quantified in terms of peak ground velocity (PGV) and strainburst velocity (VSB), respectively. Using readily available information and software, we demonstrate appropriate methods for estimating PGV and VSB from actual significant seismic events at Oyu Tolgoi mine. The results are compared with geotechnical observations, and an integration of these methods into the seismic hazard management plan is proposed.
