Limitations of STEPSIM4 are discussed and related to the revised conceptual framework. Network analysis techniques offer a unique opportunity for efficiently searching through a complex rock mass system comprising elements of the rock mass, intact rock and defects to locate the critical minimum shear strength path. Development of the revised network analysis software version, STEPSIM5, is being sponsored and is scheduled for completion in 2008.
