Pastes are typically high density and highly viscous media that exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour. This obviously causes challenges not only for pump and process pipe sizing, but also for internal pump dynamics. The internal pump dynamics have a significant effect on pump performance which has an overall effect on the performance of thickened paste-systems, reliability and life cycle costs. In paste pumping applications, positive displacement pumps, such as peristaltic hose pumps have several advantageous features, such as capability to pump high density and highly viscous slurries, accurate flow rate control and ease of maintenance. Recent hose pump innovations has improved these features especially the pump energy efficiency and life cycle costs. Case study results have shown that the several remarkable advantages could be achieved when using improved technology peristaltic hose pumps for paste thickener underflow.
