Abstract:
Augmented reality is a technology where the user’s reality is enhanced with computer-generated objects and information. This article summarizes how augmented reality could be used as an aid in rock mechanics in underground mining. The compilation is based on results from a literature review, workshops, and interviews. At the workshops, rock mechanics engineers and engineering geologists from the mining companies LKAB and Boliden in Sweden provided input. Interviews were performed with developers of augmented reality in the geomechanical field. The results indicate that there is an interest for applying augmented reality and to enhance the reality with geology data and structures, ground support information, analysis results etc. as it adds value and strengthens the role as a rock mechanics engineer. The paper describes what the technology is capable of today, and based on the identified need from the users, gives recommendations for future work if AR should be used as an aid for personnel working with rock mechanics engineering in underground mining.
