Abstract:
Hazard maps are widely used in mining to rank, compare and visualise slope stability hazards. Evaluating factors that impact waste and stockpile stability and identifying potentially hazardous areas are critical for allocating resources and proactively initiating stability analyses and/or remediation measures. To support this process, a data-driven and engineering-based methodology was developed for the preliminary hazard evaluation of stockpiles. This approach utilises only measurable parameters and quantitative factors, avoiding the use of subjective rating categories. By using a fully quantified framework, hazard values can be directly calculated and applied into a 3D block model. The resulting hazard model provides a consistent, repeatable screening tool for identifying potential stability risks in mining waste piles. This paper outlines the methodology and its application at a copper porphyry mine site containing 19 historic stockpiles.
