Abstract:
This paper presents the consequences, in terms of land stability and hydraulic impacts, of the flooding of iron mines in Lorraine, and the remediation measures that have been taken. With respect to land stability, progressive subsidence and sinkholing events occurred a few months after complete flooding. The responses consisted of the implementation of risk and hazard assessments carried out within the framework of mining risk prevention plans (MRPP), monitoring of the most sensitive areas, backfilling, and preventive evacuation in areas where public safety could not be guaranteed. The hydraulic impacts consisted of degradation of the quality of the groundwater reservoir, and modifications to the surface water system, in particular unexpected outlets. Alternative water supplies were sourced, and a new decanting point was created in the southern part of the basin.
